Children, as we know well, are the main target of the dolphinariums and that use them and use education as an alibi to make business.
Yet the information our little ones receive during the show are far from being true.
Dolphinariums make children believe, that the nature made them to be completely submissive to humans, and that dolphins, those highly intelligent and socially sophisticated creatures are nothing but circus animals clumsily repeating our gestures.
Captive dolphins performing circus show in Bruges, Antibes or elsewhere teaches children that this is how marine mammals live.
Teachers, who are supposed to be men and women promoting freedom and knowledge should not bring children to those depressing and unhealthy places and are encourage to teach them about behaviors of dolphins in the wild.
They could organize walks in their natural and the schools have enough financial resources, they could organize dolphin watching trips to the Belgian, French or the British coast, where off the coast many free cetaceans swim.
Here you can listen to a little song for the poor dolphins in captivity.
LIFE OF THE DOLPHINS TOLD FOR CHILDREN
A NEWBORN BABY DOLPHIN!
The dolphins are mammals like you and me. They live in the water like fish but their blood is warm and they give milk to their babies.
But there is still a small difference: you have your nose in the middle of your face. The dolphin has its nose, which it can open on top of his head. This little opening is called “blowhole” and the dolphin can breathe through it.
When a baby is born, all the member of the dolphins of the family are so happy that it's like t a party under water!
Every member of the dolphin family surrounds the newborn andcongratulates the young mother and dances with her.
The big sisters, the Granma, the Uncles and all the daddies all look after baby dolphin. It is still very fragile and it has to drink lots of milk to grow very quickly.
Baby dolphin is going to stay a long time with its mother and with its family, at least ten or fifteen years. It has still really much to learn before he becomes a grown up!
Baby dolphins has so much to learn to survive in the ocean! He has to learn how catch fish, how to talk to other dolphins, how to fight sharks and how to find his way in the sea during the big storms!
DOLPHINS CAN SEE IN THE DARK: THEY SEE WITH THEIR EARS!
Dolphins have very good eyesight. They can see underwater but they see colors like we do. For them everything is green !
But they see amazing shades of grey! Much more then we do!
Their eyes are a little bit like cats' eyes. However, it is not with their two eyes that they see the best but with their ears. They don't have ears like us. Theirs are small and inside their skull. They vibrate when their jaw vibrates.
Often they dive deep in the sea where you can not see any sunlight. It's completely dark but the dolphin 'hears' the things around him as clearly as if he were in daylight.
It is completely dark but dolphins “hear” things around the as clearly as if it was bright. Just like the bats, dolphins use “sonar”.
They produce sounds through their blowhole located on their foreheads and not through their mouth.
The dolphin produces very short clicking noises that they use to echolocate fish. The sound goes towards the fish and bounces back giving the dolphins information about the shape offish. This is how dolphins “see” even in complete darkness.
Even better than this, if he wants to, he can direct the noise even more piercingly towards the fish. The sound penetrates its body and the dolphin can see its bones, its stomach, its eggs and the heart of its prey, just as if he were using X rays!
If the dolphin makes the noise MUCH STRONGER it can even stun the fish from a distance. This is the 'deadly cry' of the karateka!
DOLPHINS HAVE A LANGUAGE AND THEY COMMUNICATE WITH US!
Many researchers think that dolphins speak a language, like us. This language is composed of whistles, barking, mewing, rattling and all sorts of strange noise.
The dolphins use without doubts “words” and even a real grammar! Their language is very complex and until now, nobody has been able to understand it.
The whales, the belugas, the narwhals and many other cetaceans speak also their own language. All the cetaceans are very intelligent.
Their brains are as big and as powerful as ours.Their brain have more “folds” (convolutions) than on our brain.
In some laboratories, captive dolphins are tough to speak English. The American and Russian army catch dolphins to make them soldiers. The dolphins have to learn a secret military language, made out of electronics sounds.
They talk with them at a distance with headphones then they give them orders to go and put bombs under a ship for example, or even to kill enemy divers.
Fortunately, there are other people sails on sea with the only intention of try to communicate with free dolphins. One day maybe we will understand their language. One day maybe we will be able to discuss with them.
Listen to the clicks!
Here, the dolphins “look” what surrounds them with those strange sequel of cracks.
Listen to the whistling!
Here, a “whistle signature”, which means the name of the dolphin as whistled by himself.
DOLPHINS HUNT IN GROUPS AND LIVE IN A TRIBE!
The dolphins live in a tribe, just like the American Indians in the past. In every tribe, many families live together.
A whole tribe might be up to 150 individuals.
The tribe can occupies a territory of about 100 kilometers, beginning all along the coast, between the beaches and high sea. The mother is the center of the family.
She lives among her sisters, daughters and all the dolphin babies are kept in a little nursery. Grandmas and grandpas also stay with them soemtimes.
The youngest ones respect and listen their elders because learn a lot from them. When they get much older, young male dolphins leave for a longjourney. They come back from time to time to say hello to their families.
Sometimes the female dolphins go with them but they soon come back to their mothers, especially when they are going to have a baby. The older dolphins swim close to the territory of their mothers to be protected in case of a shark attacks.
In that tribe, everybody has a name.
This is what we call the “whistled signature of the dolphin”. Every dolphin has to learn its name when it is young. When two dolphins meet, they tell each other their names. This way, each one knows where the other comes from and which family it belongs. The sounds they exchange are ultra-sounds. A dog could hear them but we can’t.
In the evening, everybody goes hunting as a group.
They gather the fish in a ball shape by producing penetrating sounds and by surrounding them with bubbles. That way fish can't see anything and they are easier to catch.
Every tribe speaks a different language.
Each one has its own way of life and favorite methods of hunting.
DOLPHINS DIE IN PRISONS AND CHILDREN GO TO SEE THEM WITH THEIR SCHOOL!
Sometimes nasty people capture dolphins in the sea.
They catch them with a net, they separate them from their families by force and they bring them on a plane to a zoo or to a dolphinarium, far away from the ocean.
Many people say that children should go to the dolphinarium to know the dolphins better. This is a lie!
When you know how the dolphins really live in the ocean, you wouldn’t want to see them in those prison!
Dolphins are forced to swim all day in small swimming pool away from their family...It is really heartbroken to see them...
Put yourself into their shoest: imagine that you were forced to stay in a small room, all your life, without being able to get out, without being able to play outside and to see your family?
The dolphins in the ocean don’t live like this. That’s for sure!
They are free, they live as a family, and they play with their friends, they hunt, they have fun, they travel, they swim at high speed under the sun and in the wind.
Their days are full of activities.
The dolphins in prison are bored all the time. They are sad. They miss their parents and their friends and they have almost no space to move.
Even the biggest pools of the biggest dolphinariums of the world are too small for them. They can never replace the sea or the ocean.
In a dolphinarium dolphins eat dead fish. There is no sand, no see weeds. There is only concrete and in the water from the tank contains chlorine that hurts their eyes. But the worse is that there is nothing to do all day and they just turn around in their smal tanks.
This is why they perfomr circus tricks. Because there is nothing else to do and they are bored. But this is also the only way they can eat! If they don't perfom the tricks then they are not fed. So they do it because they are hungry.
Just look at it closely. Have you ever seen a dolphins show where the trainers were not feeding the dolphins?
Of course not! That just never happen.
So no one should pay to see a dolphin show because the people looking after them are also hurting them if they don't perform. Never go to a delphinarium or a marineland!
We must free dolphins so as they can swim freely in the ocean with their families.
FREE DOLPHINS ARE ALSO TREATENED SOMETIMES!
Other people also hurt dolphins in the wild. Some fisheman for example use huge net to catch as much fish as possible. The only problem is that sometimes dolphins get caught in the net.
They can't swim back to the surface and they drown.
Every year, thousand of dolphins die that way.
Also because the fishermen take all the fish from the sea, there is less and less food for the dolphins. They eat fish, remember.
There also people killing them to eat them. In Japan and the Faroe islands (in Denmark) fishermen bring dolphins ashore to kill them and eat them. The dolphin meat is then sold to the butcher.
An other very dangerous thing for free dolphins are chemical substances that are tfound sometimes into the sea. It can be a farmer using fertilizers that is then brought underground to the sea or factories throwing their chemical waste rivers and seas.
The fish become contaminated with the chemicals and the dolphins who eat the fish are then contaminated too.
If you go to a shop you can ask your mum to buy more products that contains no meat or fish. It's nicer for the animals.
DOLPHINS ARE OUR FRIENDS AND SOMETIMES THEY HELP US!
It known for a long time that dolphins sometimes help mariners lost at sea during a storm ou people who are drawning. Those stories are not tales! They really happened!
A few years ago, a pod of dolphins have help someone who was attacked by sharks in Australia. All the sudden a pod of dolphins came from nowhere, circled the swimmer to protect him and pushed the sharks away. The sharks were so scared that they swam away as quick as they could and the swimmer was saved! Hundreed of people witnessed the event.
There is also the story of little Eilan was shipwrecked trying to flee Cuba he was helped by dolphins. They brought him safe and sound to the Florida beaches. All the newspapers were talking about it.
In other part of the world, dolphins help fishermen to fish. The fishermen call the dolphins by striking the sea with a large stick which makes a lot of noise.
The dolphins then arrive chasing huge school of fish ashore and the fishermen catch the fish with nets.
Instead of killing dolphins, catching them for circuses or drowning them in nets, humans could speak to them. They could ask them for their help. Dolphins know the sea better than anyone.
They could guide us under the water, they could help divers, they could show which sea weeds can cure us, and they could teach us how to get to know the ocean and respect it.
Dolphins live in a wonderful way: they never make war. They don't break anything, they don't harm anything.
They take care of their children and their old parents.
They help each other. .
They never abandon the wounded or the sick.
We really should follow their example.
DOLPHIN NEEDS US!
Dolphins are our friends and we should help them. It is not good to keep them in a zoo or kill them for food.
If one day you want to see dolphins in the wild you don't need to go to a dolphinarium. Dolphins live all over the world.
There must be dolphins or whales who swim not far from where you live !
The best thing is to go a dolphin watching tour and observe them in their natural enviroment witouth disturbing them. Sometimes the dolphins like to play near the boats and swim with people. But remember never touch or feed wild dolphins.
Dolphins find us funny and interesting but we should let them in peace and protect their home: the sea. Not many people know dolphins very that well. Many people do not realise how intelligent and kind they are.
At school you could talk to your friends or organise a little conference to explain how they live. You could also become a member of an organisation which helps dolphins and whales.
Life is becoming very difficult for all the 'wild' animals in the world : elephants, monkeys, lions, panthers, bears, wolves etc.
No one is looking after them and they don't know how to defend themselves on their own. They have no rights. For these reasons dolphins and other animals need you and all the children of the world.
They need you to speak for them. They need you to explain to grown-ups that they need to be protected.
